Programme Content 

• The role of knowledge in wildlife medicine and its importance in conservation. 

• Conservation efforts and their impact on wildlife medicine. 

• Practical application of veterinary expertise in wildlife medicine and its role in conservation projects. 

• Knowledge about the goal, management, and maintenance of a sanctuary. 

• Practical veterinary experience in wildlife medicine. 

• Challenges and ethical considerations faced in wildlife medicine and conservation. 

• Lectures on real-time Rhino care, medicine, and conservation. 

• Exposure to collaborations and partnerships in wildlife medicine and conservation and its importance to the future survival or wildlife and their natural environment. 

• The future of wildlife veterinary work and its role in conservation. 

• Understanding wildlife diseases and their impact on conservation efforts. 

• Treatment, care, and meal preparations, including nutritional supplementation for sick rhinos. 

• Assisting with the care and treatment of sanctuary patients. 

• Assist with the training and care of the Anti-Poaching K9 units.  

• Assist with Rhino Repro procedures with experienced Veterinarians, Drs. Morné, De La Rey and Hendrik Hansen – collecting Oocytes and/or semen collection and analysis.  

• A daytrip to Embryo Plus to view lab work of IVF research in Rhinos and Cattle across Africa. 

• Assist with scheduled horn trimmings and DNA sampling procedures. 

• Assist with emergency rescues and hospital procedures when necessary.  

• Participate in Night-shift duty for intensive care Rhinos. 

• Do a day-trip adventure with elephant interaction. 

• Game Drives on nearby reserves. 

• Case studies in practical wildlife medicine and conservation. 

• Learn about success stories and be part of one.

Cost 

The Rate payable for attending the Veterinary Student Programme is: 

• $3,000 (USD) for 12 days.  

The Rate includes: 

• Shuttle transfer to and from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa.
