NAMIBIA WILDLIFE VETERINARY EXPERIENCE – HARNAS EDITION

“10/10 Trip of a lifetime! Every part of this trip was phenomenal and a once-in-a lifetime experience. The vet experience was incredible and a great way to see wildlife up close and have experiences with these animals that you would not be able to get anywhere else. We sedated and health checked five male lions, two cheetahs and a hyena – every part of this experience was incredible and life changing.”  Natalie (August 2024)

This special veterinary experience is designed for students or professionals in the fields of veterinary, vet nursing or animal sciences or pre-vets wishing to gain more insight into the world of veterinary care at an African wildlife sanctuary.  Just 10 spots are available in each group, so be quick !

This 2 weeks program is all about veterinary-focussed theory and practical. 10 solid days with the wildlife vet team, with a large number of resident animals to care for these are the ideal groups to join if you want to maximise your wildlife veterinary exposure.

The Wildlife Veterinary Experience is hosted throughout by the head veterinarian/s, both incredible sources of information gained through their experiences working daily with Africa’s wildlife. Your days will be filled with pre-planned practical activities such as the capture and immobilisation of various resident animals for sampling and health checks, with a focus on large carnivores such as leopard, lion and African wild dog. A primate sterilisation program is a key priority project so expect to be involved with chacma baboons or vervet monkeys.

You’ll also get hands-on with the small stock vaccination program and the carnivore feeding tour will introduce you to the variety of big cats who call Harnas home. An exciting session with the K9 Anti-Poaching Unit will introduce you to the essential work carried out by this team of intrepid rangers and their dogs. If you’re lucky there may also be chance to feed the herd of free-roaming rhino. What’s more, you will get a front-row seat for any unexpected veterinary activities which arise, including emergency callouts and wildlife rescues.

The practical sessions are interspersed with a series of informative and engaging presentations to ensure you learn extensively about wildlife conservation, game management and the veterinary care of captive animals in Africa. Wildlife capture and immobilisation, behavioural patterns in captive animals, pharmacology, physiology, nutrition, contraception, zoonosis, poaching and conservation, suturing, disease identification and control …..
