From the 29th of March to 27th April 2016 one of our members, was contracted to observe and offer general farm-hand help and veterinary advice to help improve the general efficiency and profitability of three local farms in Kenya, east Africa. These particular farms were special in the way in which they were attached to local rescue and rehabilitation centers for abandoned children and any profit these farms created went directly to these children’s homes. Maximizing profit was therefore key and Bart spent a total of two months in Kenya working alongside the local farmers and noted his findings in a report. This report described his observations, identified and explained problems and opportunities, and offered solutions and recommendations to increase the overall efficiency and hence profit of the farms. These recommendations included specific cases, for example, on keeping cows, chickens, ducks, goats, geese and rabbits, and also on the general running of the farm and management of the staff. Over the course of 2016 these recommendations will be implemented and in 2017 Bart will return to these farms to monitor progress and make adjustments where necessary.
